Fix A Squeaking Door By Yourself
If you own your very own home, it helps if you can repair a few things by yourself; it seems there’s always something that needs to be fixed. A squeaky door is certainly one such thing. It’s not a big difficulty, but it sure can certainly be an irritant to everyone until it’s fixed. It’s the kind of thing you prefer to take care of all by yourself, and not have to call a repairman.
The very first thing you must do to correct it is discover exactly where the squeak is. Never even look at replacing the door itself – do the swing check first. Try to pinpoint the exact source of the squeak by listening carefully as you swing the door back and forth. Usually, you can hear the loudest place where the noise is coming from, and by that, figure out what the cause is. If you are not having any results, consider swinging the door at different speeds.
You will probably find that there is a dry hinge or two needing lubrication. If so, tighten the screws positioning the plates to the door to begin with, and then pour a few drops of WD-40, or sewing maching oil, directly on the hinge. Move the door back and forth slowly while the oil seeps into the hinge. You’ll find out if this was indeed the problem straightaway. If it didn’t, there is one more thing that quite typically happens. Sometimes a wooden door can swell or warp because of high humidity, causing a squeak where wood rubs against wood. To stop this, simply move the door stop so that it doesn’t impact the door itself. A solid wood block as well as a hammer are the only tools you’ll need for this. Simply put the wood across the door stop where it seems to be squeaking, and knock it over slightly.
After the door quits squeaking and moves without problems, you’re done. The issue through doing this, is that you will more than likely break the paint, and needs to be repainted. Another possible issue is when the hinge is rubbing against the door jam, which could be caused by the hinges being cut in too deeply, or maybe not cut in deeply enough. Take the hinges off and, if they are cut too deep put a shim in at the rear of them; when they are not deep enough, deepen them. Nearly every door squeak can be repaired through this process.
It may be an easy fix, or you may just have to replace the whole door. By working with pre-hung doors, this can be a pretty effortless job. You simply need to make certain your doors match and be sure to consider a thorough job of re-painting. Regardless of what it is, the great thing is to be able to complete it yourself.
